Motor vehicle accidents involving bicyclists

On Behalf of  | Dec 8, 2021 | Personal Injury

If you regularly bike to work or enjoy riding a bicycle, you need to understand the risks you face whenever you ride near traffic. Moreover, you should also review the risks bicyclists face if you have concerns about your child’s safety while they ride their bicycle near traffic. Sadly, many bicyclists suffer severe injuries, and some even lose their lives in motor vehicle collisions.

From speeding to drunk driving and poor visibility, bicycle accidents involving vehicles take place for an array of reasons.

Statistics on bicyclists and traffic accidents

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention draws attention to the prevalence of bicyclist injuries and deaths. Over the course of 2015, nearly 467,000 people suffered injuries as a result of bike accidents, and more than 1,000 bicyclists lost their lives.

When it comes to non-fatal bike accident injuries, bicyclists between five and 19 had higher rates of injuries than older bicyclists. Furthermore, male bicyclists suffered nonfatal injuries four times more frequently than female bicyclists.

Taking steps to prevent bicycle accidents

The CDC outlines different steps that bicyclists can take to prevent bike accidents. For example, you can wear reflective clothing and use lights on your bike to help drivers see you. Make sure you wear a helmet properly and always remain vigilant while riding your bike.

Drivers also play a key role in preventing bike accidents. Sadly, some drivers use their phone on the road, drive drunk or go too fast, causing them to collide with a bicyclist. Reckless drivers who cause bicyclists to suffer serious injuries must answer for the consequences for their actions.
