Could you have a brain injury and not know it?

On Behalf of  | Jun 22, 2022 | Personal Injury

A car crash may leave you with more than a few bruises. Internal damage to your body may remain hidden and cause even more issues as the hours and days go on. One of the most serious delayed injuries involves your brain.

A brain injury can happen without you feeling much of anything. Between the adrenaline pumping through your body and a lack of symptoms, you may not notice there is a problem until the damage becomes more widespread. Familiarize yourself with some of the warnings that your brain may have an injury.

Why is a brain injury not always obvious?

Some car accidents do not seem too dangerous and destructive. As a result, you may not believe you have injuries. Since you did not smack your head, you may think there is no injury. However, the forces of a crash may still cause your brain to sustain damage. The brain sits in a jelly-like substance that helps cushion it, but it does not prevent it from sliding. If your head snaps back and forth and the brain hits your skull, it may actively bleed without you knowing.

What are the common signs of a TBI?

When dealing with a delayed onset traumatic brain injury or TBI, you may want to watch out for some of the most common symptoms. Since the brain is the epicenter of your body, it often gives off subtle signals of distress. The most obvious is a worsening headache that does not go away with pain management. Other signs include:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Dizzy spells
  • Insomnia or sleeping too much
  • Recent memory recall issues

The only way to ensure your brain is healthy after any incident is by getting a complete medical checkup. The sooner this occurs, the more likely you will receive treatment before the damage becomes permanent or more serious.
